Application Process

This section will walk you through the Application process step by step, in order to prevent confusion, and get your application processed as quickly as possible. However, it should be noted that becoming an Instructor in VATUSA is not an overnight thing. It will take some time and patience on your part, and we appreciate your cooperation in advance.

Familiarize yourself with the procedures on becoming a VATUSA Staff Instructor located on this website.

Complete the online application

All candidates for the Staff Instructor rating must be pre-selected by their ATM or TA and must complete the application in full. Incomplete applications will be discarded.
All candidates must have held the rating of Controller or Senior Controller for at least 30 days prior to applying for this position.

Letter of Recommendation

During this step, we will contact your ARTCC's ATM and Training Administrator, and ask for their Letter of Recommendation and Approval of you becoming an Instructor in their ARTCC. This step requires no intervention from you.

Take the online exam

Once you receive a letter from us stating that we have received a letter of recommendation from your ATM and Training Administrator, you will be eligible to take the Instructor Exam. Once assigned, you will receive an automated email letting you know the test is available via the VATUSA Certification Center.

The Exam is 30 questions, with information from the following:

  • VATUSA Study Guides
  • FAA 7110.65
  • Aeronautical Information Manual

Final Touches

Once you pass the Instructor exam with an 80% or higher, you will receive a letter from us congratulating you on your hard work, and accepting you into the VATUSA Training Department. At this time, we might meet with you online just to teach you a few things. In most cases it is up to the Training Administrator to go over specific policies for your facility since they tend to vary by ARTCC. You will also receive an email containing the following information:

  • Instructor Site Username/Password
  • Information on Instructor access at the Certification Center
  • Specific instructions on instructing within VATUSA
